Very cool.... I was on your web site yesterday. Would be kinda hard to fish that water, huh?? Wow. And I thought the Wild & Scenic Section of the Rogue was "big"... looks like a lot of fun & and a tremendous challenge to run. I'm intrigued. Look forward to following your progress on new boats.
Howdy, lookin for another dory on a July 7 Grand Canyon launch if you're interested. Nineteen days to the new pearce ferry take-ou. Drop me a line. Jim
Hey Larry, hope you're still enjoying the snow. We got plenty of it here in the last couple of days. Quick question, was wondering if you've taken your drift boat much thru Red Canyon on the Green? and if so, how do you like to run Red Creek at these 850 flows. just lookin for info to keep the paint on my newest drift boat creation. Talk soon, Jim
Wow thanks for all the great information. I've been down the stretch 6 or 7 times and am pretty familiar with the rapid itself, so I can fairly well visualize your description. I'm usually in a raft but have taken the Briggs down the left at flows around 1100 and it went well. Reason I'm asking though is that I just finished building a McKenzie drift boat that's kind of a hybrid, partially decked but with kneelocks and swivel seat, and want to get it over there sometime this spring. So by your description, I'm assuming you run the left side with your drift boat at those low flows.....?
Great, thanks a lot for the information, really appreciate it. Looks like one of your photos has you on the left side in your green drift boat. Hope you have a great season.
Jim
Larry, I don't check my home page that often, Sorry this not is so late.
The software for this site is off the shelf NING. It is a social site package that allows customization and it very easy to use. The back end is completely run by the folks at NING for $39.00 a month as I'm using it or for free if you leave their NING logos up and their google ads. The only bummers are I'm loosing the $500.00 a year because I don't yet monetize the site and I don't get the 5000 kits a month on my drift boat business website. Oh well. It preserves the social group to do it this way.
I use a Dyna CNC. Shopbot is a great machine but I opted for a "local" machine. Dyna CNC is from Monroe, WA and I can get local parts, help etc if I need. The other reason I selected that machine is they drive the router with standard G-Code. Shopbot uses a proprietary code system that is a little easier to read but would lock all my cut files to a Shopbot machine unless I converted them.
I use two software packages to design boats. A simple hull generator called Pro Chine. It allows great flexibility to push and pull points to generate fair hull lines. I think export IGES files from ProChine into Rhino 3D. Rhino has become a standard in the marine industry. I use it to build out the hull shape into parts that I then unroll and layout for cut files. I generate the cut files with another plug-in software for Rhino called Rhino CAM.
Mornin Larry,
How was your May Grand trip..Photos? I think I mentioned to you that I had a July launch, but due to some illness in my family I had to jump off. However, now everything's resolved, but now am stuck with no Grand for the first time in 20 some years. Wondered if you might know of anyone looking for an experienced Grand oarsmen for a fall trip.?
Also, my two sons and I are planning a July 11-14 Green run below the dam, if you happen to be in the area or would like to join us that'd be great. I know summer's a busy time for everyone.
Bummer you didn't get to take the dory, but a Grand in a raft's not a bad compromise. We're itching to get the McKenzie out, only my brother's had it on the Colorado by Moab - said the seat box was too high so had to lower it about 3 inches, then lowered the front seat as well, the Green will be the test run, although we're thinking about the upper Yampa next weekend.
Larry,
I'm starting to lean more towards Stitch and Glue. How would you get an accurate bottom pannel from a set of Roger's plans for a 16ft Rapid Robert. Would I make temporary frames so as to flip the hull and trace for a cut or is there a way to loft it from the plans? I have never lofted anything before.
Mornin Larry, was wondering if you have any leads on boatmen for an October 9th Grand trip. I'm looking for one or two more folks with boats, rafts or wood either one. thanks, Jim
Thanks for getting back to me, and many thanks for the March inquiry, however I'll be back in grad school next semester and won't be available for a long trip till May. Good luck, Jim
Hey Larry, my brother has a Sept. 25th Deso permit. Looks like the dam will hold at around 2200 -2500 during the month of Sept. I was wondering if you've been through there at low water with your woodies and could provide some insight. thanks for any info there, Jim
Great Info, really appreciate it. My brother has the decked over McKenzie, I'm stuck with the Briggs if I end up taking it. I had heard about Joe Hutch but your description helps a lot. Guess I'll have to make a call there whether or not to take the briggs. thanks again, Jim
How many days are you floating Deso? Hope you don't mind if I pick your brain a little when you get back, would really like to take these two woodies if it's feasible.
Hey Larry, thanks for the great info. I guess due to indecision and having just the last weekend to get ready, we've opted to take rubber and check it out this time, hopefully get back next fall with the dories if the water is back up to at least this level. Looks like a nice run and I'm looking forward to it. talk later, Jim
Looks like a steep, deep hole. And I would agree, a couple more PSI would have made it less crazy, but then I guess you never know. Appreciate it, leaving for Vernal here in a couple of hours. I'll give you a report when I return, thanks again for the information.

Will i stich the panels together or will the frames serve that pourpouse while I do the fillets?
will I do the front half inside, and then the stern, or do a fillet inbetween the frames, let them cure remove that frames and fill in the gaps?
Also shold I be posting these questions on Montana riverboats forum? I've seen you post there often and it seems to be more s&g friendly.
