Hard to explain....but a short shaft was too short. The long shaft seemed the perfect length. Take note that the rocker on your boat may dictate which motor you go with. Probably the best thing to do is sit the motor on the transom at the boat store.

Mine is not too long nor too short.

Al,

I use a longshaft 6hp Mercury. It is a 20" shaft.
