Greetings all-  I am brand new to the forum (and dory's) and this is my first post.

I presently own a 13 ft plywood driftboat and am planning to renovate it to a mostly decked dory for some mild whitewater fun. I would like to know some of your favorite suppliers for material such as epoxy, fiberglass, kevlar, and marine plywood.

I've been doing a lot of sourcing for materials lately for my build. Price wise I have found best prices for differant materials at different places

Best price on resin is raka or resin research..

Best price for e glass cloth is raka or eBay

Best price for biax cloth, tape is fiberglass supply

Best price on Kevlar is the 5oz twaron imitation fabric from Noah's at about $10 yd.

For plywood try to order some thru a local lumberyard or if you are in a highly populated area look for hardwood specialty stores and or yards that cater to cabinet shops.

Thanks for the info Chris - This is the first I've heard of twaron. Is it considered "as good as" kevlar or an acceptable substitute? Have you found lumber yards less expensive than direct (online) for marine ply? I did obtain a quote online for 1 sheet and the shipping was roughly $100 from Seatlle area to Denver area.

Twaron is an generic aramid woven fabric. Kevlar is aramid. Kevlar is a patented product owned by DuPont. Twaron is the same product minus the brand name. Kinda like goretex vs h2no, or event. Same idea...u pay less without the brand name. Also, that twaron is 38" wide so u need 2 pieces to spam the width of the hull. Makes it more like $20.. Still spendy

I agree with Chris. Raka is where I purchased everything except my plywood. I saved on shipping that way. If you have to have the plywood shipped, count on shipping and "crating" to be severe. I live in Michigan and was going to order plywood from Ohio, a 7 hour drive to their shop. Shipping and crating was $175.00. Then I found a place in Traverse City, a two hour drive so I just went and picked it up!

Larry at Raka is a cool dude who will be happy to answer questions and they are pretty good about giving deals on their cloth "remnants".

Good luck!
