I discovered some rot in a white oak chine batten and the photos show the result. I have built a Ray's kit which had all the scarfing done so this is my first scarf. I could not find any white oak cut to anywhere close to correct size locally. I got the white oak from rockler woodworking for $4.68 they shipped fast and I am happy with them. It was cut to 1 3/4 X 1/2 a quick zing with the belt sander and it was ready. This is a pragmatic repair I want to go fishing and need the boat done!!
One of the battens on my 1978 Keith Steele boat had gone south. I have some white oak from our property and was able to cut two 8' strips 1 1/2 X 1/2. I beveled them first, then scarfed them on my chop saw. I made a plywood jig with one face clamped to the fence, and the other perpendicular at the edge of the curf. I placed a support out far enough so that I could bring the pieces in perpendicular to the fence, and clamped them to the jig. (One at a time, of course!) I then adjusted the saw to the steepest angle I could to cut the scarf. They were then glued with West 2 part epoxy. I was able to find a 12' aluminum strip at Coyote Steel in Eugene that was 1/2 X 1/8. I used that as a face for the outside of the batten.
