I am to the point where I am cutting the transoms for my skiff and I was just wondering what the consensus was for the best way to cut the compound angles.
I dont have a huge wood shop, but I do have a table saw that I was going to use to cut them. Would is be wise to cut them to shape a bit over size and then cut the bevel, or can a guy just make both angles in a single pass with a mitre gauge with a larger fence attached?
Is there a better tool or technique you guys use.
Thanks,
Andrew

Hey Andrew.A clamped straight edge and a skill saw will work just fine.If not draw a straight line and free hand it on the table saw.
Mike.
That was the other idea that I was considering. I recently bought a table saw as I could no longer put it off. I originally planned on using a skill saw with a clamped edge, but thought I would get a better cut with the table saw.
I was thinking about it today, and I was thinking about some combination of mitre gauge or fence. I guess I'll have to go make some saw dust this weekend.
What are you doing in the boat forums? Looking for another project?
Andrew
I also have a cross cut sled that rides in the miter slot you can borrow. But your limited to how big your table top is on your saw.How long are the angled cuts?
You could also just use some cheap scrap ply, once you have the cut just right you can then copy it with a flush trim bit in the router.
Let me no if you need to borrow some tools.
cheers .
Thanks for the offer. I had wondered if a sled would work. I think I will do a test piece and see how it goes. My saw is a Bosch so it is a little bit bigger than some of the smaller job site saws.
I cant remember what the dimensions right know, but if I recall the angled edge is 27".
Thanks for the offer on the router. I'll let you know how it goes & be in touch if I need to borrow it. Router is next on my list of things to buy, but I am also wanting to buy a new fly tying vise. My cheapo one aint cutting it any more.

New tools are always great.if you build your self an outfeed table with a miter slot then a cross cut sled will do the cut.
I had one for that same saw it worked well.If i remember it was quite easy to attach the table, i also made it about 16" wider to the left of the blade so the sled had more to slide on.
