Was in a resale shop the other day and took a pic of a cool old painting on the wall. Wonder where the location for this was, he has a spare oar and I would say nerves of steel !!
Mike: Looks like a log driving Bateaux -close relative to a drift boat. Here in Maine these were in common use driving sawlogs down the rivers- such as the Penobscott . The mills provided lumber for the north east coast. I might take days to get down the rivers and the Bateaux hauled supplies for the camps. Log jams were a problem and had to be "pulled apart" by guys running along the jams with peavies and pike poles. These guys had guts and today they would drive OSHA inspectors nuts.
