Its looking like I am going to have a wonderful opportunity. Summer 2013 I will have the chance to float Powell's trip from Green River through the Grand! While this trip in it self will be a large undertaking, I was thinking of making it all the more interesting with a historic build to take with me on the river for a few months.
So my question is what historic boat do you guys think would be not only a cool build, but also be practical to take on the river for that long? I will most likely be alone for some of the flatter sections, but will have raft support on others such as the Grand.
Links and pics would be awesome! I watched the building of Edith on here, looks awesome! Maybe also looking at The Glen, The WEN and The Music Temple. Let me know what you guys think!!!

Hi Ben, you will have a GREAT trip! I can certainly suggest the GEM (see my page this web site), as i have taken that replica on a number of rivers (Yampa, Grand Canyon, Moab Daily to Potash, McKenzie) and found it a boat very versatile for general boating and boat-based-camping fun. I bet the Susie Too (renamed Music Temple) would serve you well too, but... after rowing kyle Frye's replica of the Susie Too, I found what Randy found, that while it will haul gear, it's kind of a pig to row. The sadiron's are not too fun to row, and the Glen is long and narrow, without a way to carry a passenger in any comfort. Just my two cents, yours, tom

"...the last bad one above me--the Bad Rapid--Lava Cliff--that I had been looking for, nearly a thousand miles--I thought: once past there my reward will begin, but now everything ahead seems kind of empty and I find I have already had my reward, in the doing of the thing. The stars, the cliffs and canyons, the roar of the rapids, the moon, the uncertainty and worry, the relief when through each one the campfires at night, the real respect of the rivermen I met and others... Maybe because Buzz was such a badass, maybe because the Julius is just so damn sexy, but his boat would be my choice: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QTy5B74sYlU/TxZ3nstB0II/AAAAAAAAA7Q/_HVZE...
Jeremy has a great idea. Buzz’s 1937 trip in Julius from the headwaters of the Green through the Canyon and Lake Mead, and then nosing up against Hoover was a “one and only.” I helped Brad Dimock recover the boat’s lines and in September-October 2001 we built the hull here. Brad and company finished her off in Flagstaff that winter. The boat is Port Orford cedar lapstrake. I have never finished off the plans because I figured it was a one-off boat. It would be a hell-of-a-boat-project -- in more ways than one. Brad's re-creation lies in repose at his shop.
