Oregon White Oak Logs

An old (250-400 year old) Oregon white oak reached the end of its life at our old family home on the North Umpqua River. I grew up with this tree as a kid and was attached to it. I have been attempting to find a higher value use for it than firewood and furniture artisans are highly interested if the wood were brought to them milled. A big lift since I want to give the wood away. It is in log (large) form and would need to be milled. The logs are clear of rot and solid. They have been sitting on dry ground, but exposed, for a little over a year. Any boat builders interested or have portable sawmill connections? Thanks so n advance, Bill

You might call Urban Lumber in Eugene/Springfield.  They might buy it.  I see their hauling truck.

David--Thank-you for the tip. I have been looking for a year for someone who could use this legacy tree's wood. By their website they are a turn-key shop. I will call them Monday and maybe they will take the logs as they are free. Hundreds of non-scarfed chines and gunwales we are talking about here! Regards, Bill

I met a guy recently who has a mill. He doesn't have a website but I will email him with this link to see if he is interested. Man I wish there was a way I could have that tree!

Mike--I can think of nothing better than the wood going to a boat builder such as yourself.  I have no interest in profit, and will give the wood away, and and actually would cover costs to a reasonable degree if the tree were to go to a higher use.  The tree was a constant in my life for 50 years.  I was told sometime back that it was too green and that this September/October it would be seasoned.  I would  like to have someone look at it to confirm that is seasoned well.  Tomorrow I will have photos and measurements taken.  I am glad you have interest, and if you do, let me know how we connect outside of this forum.  I live in Bend same as you.

I am going to try to come up with a way to get it but i will not have time untill after sept( elk season) i will check back if i figure it out. Dont despair one of us woodophiles will grab it
