Refinishing Rookie

About 6 Years ago my dad gave me his Mckenzie that he built 23 years ago. For some reason he decided to go the Clackacraft route. Well it's long over due for a refinishing. I'm new at this so I was hoping for some advice on the best way to strip it down and what to put back on it. I'm also not sure what to do about a bottom for it. It's had just about everything. It does leak quite a bit which I understand is common for older boats. I've gotten a little bit of a start and taken most of the bottom down but I'm having trouble removing the old varnish on the sides. I would like to return the outside to how it looks now but would prefer to get the inside down to the natural wood so it's a lighter color when finished. I imagine the inside will take a lot of sanding to get down to the original wood. I think the darker color on the outside is a stain but not sure. Any help would be great. I've seen a lot of beautiful boats on this site and would like mine to be one of them when I'm done.

Hello everyone,
I've been a big slacker on keeping everyone updated on the progress of the boat. I've got the outside and bottom ready to re-finish. I haven't run into any bad wood which is good and I've decided to just stick to the outside for now so I can get some days in on the river. I plan to do the inside of the boat over the winter. Anyway, I can't seem to get the outside chine off. the screws are either stripped, broken or full of junk so I can't get a screwdriver or drill in to twist them out. I think I could pry the chine off but don't want to break it or cause more damage to other structures. Any Suggestions? The bedding underneath definitely needs replaced. For the bottom I plan on using some fiberglass cloth, maybe 2 layers of 12 oz or a 24 oz woven roving. The sides I will varnish or epoxy and varnish not sure which, again any suggestions? And how much varnish to cover both sides? One more question before I get too many for people to respond to. What are people using to get the wood a darker color? As you can see in the pics from my first post there is a darker border around a lighter middle that I would like to duplicate. Thanks in advance for the help.

In googling, I found you folks and the first thing I read is about a BOAT called a McKenzie...I AM a Mackenzie who has Grandpa's boat...I am looking forward to reading more, learning more and hopefully getting some guidance in redoing Gramp's boat!
