Roughed up by the Rogue

Boat Building Brothers... and Sisters
I need your help.  Last week I hit the Wild & Scenic Rogue and, as usual, it hit back!  Most of my repairs have been boat-bottom "push-ups" from running the Rogue in low water.  On this trip, however, we had water water everywhere.  Four days of heavy rain caused the river to surge from 1,200 cfs to +3,500 cfs while we were ON IT.
 

I got slammed into the canyon wall at Black Bar and now I have a "push in" instead of a "push up" to fix.  (if you think this looks bad, you should see the canyon wall - I think I moved it a couple of inches... ha ha)
Here's a little video - it explains so much!!  Randy, I didn't get the Moody Blues permission, so I'll take this down after the "boat building community" is entertained a bit.

Please give me your clever ideas on pushing out the "push in" so I can fix it up and do it again... man I love that river - and this boat!!

I've got nothing for you on the repair, but that video was great! Nice job on the filming and editing. Sorry about the boat, but I have little doubt that somebody will chime in with some great repair advice! Hope that you're back on the water before you know it.....

I had to float another 20 miles with that little scratch - including Mule Creek Canyon and Blossom Bar. Nothin like Duct Tape for a riverside repair!! See you on the water.

First of all, my sympathies. Tough to see a beautiful boat like yours roughed up.

Second: Holy Bleep! The video is incredible. Makes what we call rapids around here look like minor riffles.

I'll attach a photo that shows how I repaired the interior of my boat after a really stupid accident. Basically, I injected epoxy into the wound with a syringe, used Saran Wrap as a release coat and applied pressure to a scrap of thin Masonite with load bolts. There are two big differences between my situation and yours (and that's ignoring the gulf in build quality between your beauty and my beast) - I was fixing the interior and my boat is painted, which allowed me to hide the repair. However, I presumed that you have some interior damage to attend to. Good luck.

Great video - Cool to see how you lower down the fish ladder - I always wondered the correct technique:
Being from the east, the closest thing I had seen regarding getting down that ladder was a you tube video; it involved a couple guys in a raft trying to run it...One makes it, another winds up stranded in between the falls and the ladder and the third gets goes overboard and loses his pants. I knew that couldn't be correct. Thanks for clarifying. JG

Well thanks a lot John... I was worried about losing my grip, losing my footing, losing my boat - I never even thought about losing my pants - I'll add it to the list!!
The Fish Ladder is a little chute to the "river right" of Rainie Falls - (a Class V with a vertical drop of over 12' and un-runnable in a wooden drift boat at almost any level). "Easing" a boat down the chute is no bargain - lots of crazy things happen when a 300 pound boat is tethered to a 100' rope. I mounted the camera to my hat - thought you might enjoy the POV... I cut out the part where the boat caught current and practically pulled me out of my boots. I did a face plant, hung on to the rope and was dragged over a couple of rocks before "self arresting". Not pretty - but my pants stayed on!! GH

Great video! I watched it a couple times, makes me want to be on the water!
Sorry to see the ding the Obsession suffered, but what can you do besides fix her and do it all over again...

This really motivates me to get a good camera that is waterproof and do some filming.
Keep us posted on the repair, and thanks again for posting that video... it will get me through the rest of the work week!'

I've had a lot of fun with my little Contour HD camera - shoots some pretty good stuff on the river... and "in" the river (sometimes).
I'll be posting pics of the fix.

Boat- hell, I wouldn;t worry on it. I'd sand off the varnish, slap a piece of 8oz glass over it, feather it in and go ding up th eother side. as you all well know, boats like yours get a lifetime of dings.
