Ok - So on a painted boat is is commonplace to plug the screw holes on the stem and transom? I usually see the screw pattern and it looks nice, but would it be better to just fill over the screw heads with thickened epoxy and sand it flush prior to painting? It seems like another place that water could potentially penetrate the hull. Thoughts on this? Thanks.

Wow Greg, now that is an innovative idea! Crazy, as in no way I would ever try it, but innovative. I actually cant even imagine trying to do it, but hey that's how all great things are invented right? It would work great if the current through mule creek was slow and consistent, but as you well know now, this isn't the case. There is more weird, swirling, fast, current through there then any place on the river. I saw that on the back of your boat but I thought it was just a spacer block for a big motor mount or something.

It worked well on Class II water where there is "time" and a lot of river to make a turn... it was actually a lot of fun to "tinker" with. One look down the canyon, however, and I could tell my "advisors" were right... the water is just a little too evil through there.
I've got a couple more ideas I'm sleeping on - we'll see what develops.

I am hoping to leave my screws exposed when I get to that point. I'm wondering if a third coat of epoxy over the outside of the boat and screw heads would seal them properly. What do you all think?

Probably wouldn't hurt. I opted to only put 2 coats of epoxy on the outside of my hull. The epoxy alone ads no strength without cloth, so 2 coats seemed ample. You could probably coat the screw heads without re-coating the entire sides...
