Hey...need some advice on the fabrication of a rear(stern) casting brace for my boat.  I have seen many designs...any ideas as to a sturdy, but good looking design?   Thanks!!!

the gunwale to gunwale arch seems to be a solution frought with problems. seems to make moving around the boat difficult and and i hear they are wobbly. i tried to make something similar that spanned my running boards, but it didn;t work out too well. it was way wobbly so i intentionally leaned into it and broke it in frustration. didn't take much and i didnt feel bad about it despite all the time put in because it was obvious that it wasen't going to work. i like the idea posted in an earlier thread where are a metal bar was fabricted out of piping and fittings and attched to the back of the rowers seat. fabricate some kind of top with hooks and that could be a really nice solution, but some might say sacriledge at putting metal on a wood boat. me, i'm hardly a traditionalist and i care more about function over fashion. im also moving away from wood altogether in search of more modern composite materials, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

on the next boat (a ww dory) i will likely be putting in removeable pedestals that will attach to the splash gaurd on the front deck, and the rowers seat (or rower bulkhead dry box in my case) in the back. these will probably look similar to the ones the jason cajune makes on his MBB boats, but mine may be foam core. i think if you want to make those out of wood you will have to cold mold them. there are some great videos on vimeo about vaccum bagging wood laminates around forms to make complex shapes too. worth a watch, but it may be more elaborate and time consuming a solution than you are looking for.

there was a great thread last year or so you can probably search for that had some ideas (this is the one i mentioned earlier. search for rear casting brace.

Thanks, chris....I really appreciate your help...I agree that the arch would make it difficult to move around...that was my main concern.  I will look into the past thread.  I'll post what i find out.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!
