Just finished The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko (Scribner, May 2013). It is an elegantly written, well researched, and exciting non-fiction that reads like a novel while capturing the essence of wood on water in the hands of intrepid adventurers who break most of the rules to engage in a mesmerizing run down a runaway river, in a canyon, for which hyperbole does little justice. Fedarko’s gift for describing context and circumstance without boredom, truth with fanfare, and a climax of orgasmic proportions, caused me to neglect my shop for two days, irritate a couple of customers, and generally rekindle an appreciation for unbridled spirits of freedom. It’s an excellent read.
