The new 17 Footer
I'm putting the fishing touches on the modified Don Hill design 17 footer. I've moved the casting deck and and brace forward. The front seat is an RTIC 65 gallon cooler which acts as a pedestal and provides more room. Not pictured is the rear removable rear pedestal seat and casting platform. There are still a few items the add. The anchor system arrives tomorrow, oar locks need to be drilled, etc... The last photo is of my 14' Ray's design which sits in the window of my Fly Shop. Let me know what you think...

On a serious note, how are you planning to trim the cooler front to back if at all? I'm planning to have a cooler as well but was thinking of blocking to level it and have it sit on the floor between ribs. Passenger in rear? Move cooler in front of frame 8. No rear passenger? In front of frame 7....
Thats a sexy set of boats and shops. I just got my hatteras white in the other day. Hope you dont mind the ripoff

that looks pretty good, going to hit the wooden boat shows with it to show off? I made a mushroom shaped leg brace instead of the hip one for the rear seat in my boat.

I'm a one man show at my Fly Shop so taking off right now is not an option. Do you have a photo of the mushroom brace? I still have not built my rear brace.

Bennett, The cooler is strapped directly to the frame. The frame is screwed into the floorboards, not the rub. If I want to trim it front or backwards I'll just unscrew it and move it. The floor boards are meant to be used and eventually replaced. So having some screw holes does not concern me. #2 question. I had a very slight crack that ran along the inside rail between those ribs. The block was add to protect it from breaking. But it is just a slight crack.

Thanks Gregg, that makes a lot more sense. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how the floor boards will work if I have the cooler sit between the ribs. But my boats still upside down so I've got time to mull it over

I've seen a couple of boats where they build the front seat thwarts around the cooler so the whole unit slides on the rails. Never seen seat backs but it seems if you made the frame wide (deep?) enough you could incorporate some seat backs behind the cooler.

I was going to build a frame around it and have it slide. But in order for it to work it would need to be suspended. The cooler empty weighs 35 lbs, add beverages, ice and a big guy and it could be weighing 280-300+ Lbs. That just seemed like I would be asking for trouble. Without the seat backs or frame it is easier to move from to back.

Mike that would also bring you back to having a bench vs pedestal up front. I'm planing on a seat mounted directly on top of the cooler. If it all fails it's easy to rip it all out and go with the original bench/rail design

It makes it much easier for the rower and guy up front to switch seats. Just think how much space you'll save. I also have a Yeti Hopper, so the front seat/cooler can be used as dry storage on day trips.

My plan as well, have a 20 quart cooler as the rear pedestal and the cooler up front. Use both as coolers, or both dry, whatever. Versatility and rower switch off is the name of the game
