Greetings boat builders: Having finished a Peapod destined for MT the "cheapskate" in me wanted a trailer that would be capable of chores other than boat hauling. Deer, Elk, topsoil, firewood, etc. The boat, mast, sprit, oars, anchor, rudder, etc are around 200 lbs and slightly over 13 ft. A conventional boat trailer was around $1200-$1400.
I purchased a 5 ftx8 ft utility trailer from Tractor Supply-1500 lb capacity with 13 in. wheels, decked over the steel mesh with 2 in x 8 in PT, through bolted to the frame. The village blacksmith cut the 4 ft ramp down to 2 ft and added a few more braces to the front rail. Spare tire/600 lb strap winch / keel braces and 4 tiedown straps completed the job. It tracks down the highway like its on rails- up to 70 mph( just for testing). The boat extends beyond the "tailgate" about 3 ft. The whole rig is less than 800 lbs- and does bounce when hitting some of our potholes around town.
The trip from ME to MT will be about 2000 miles and I will report how it went upon arrival. Lots of stripe bass on flies this summer- but no keepers.
