What To Do With a Wood Boat In Jackson?
Unfortunately, my wife and I have to take a month off of work to live and play in Driggs, ID from mid-July to mid-August. It's a real shame.
Since we are from Denver, we don't know the area very well and I was thinking ya'll might have some suggestions for what to do with my newly completed boat while we are there. I'm looking for suggestions for good float trips for sightseeing, good float trips for fishing, good float trips for practicing my oarsmanship in some whitewater (I've only floated the tame North Platte in Casper) and good overnight camping/float trips. I've done a bunch of research online, so I know about most of the usual spots, but some first-hand knowledge would be very helpful. Anything within two or three hours is fair game. Also, we will probably only have one car, so if people know good shuttle services, be sure to include them. Thanks for the help everyone!

i know where driggs is =) i live just over the pass. as for floating, the section of the teton river above the canyon is pretty classic fishing. other than that, i'm nt really sure what there is in teton valley. in jackson, we have the snake which is an awesome river and every section from jackson lake to palisades is good floating and fishing. i reccomend deadmans bar to moose in the park for scenics, anywhere from south park down seems to have the best fishing that time of year, and if you are looking to improve your oarsmanship, the snake canyon is a very fun run which should be at nice flows when you get here. that said most of the sections from deadmans down are reasonably technical being that the river is a braided channel thru most of this. give a shout when get to town and hopefully i'll have my boat done too.

What is the Snake like from the dam to deadmans? How long does it take? How long would a dam to moose trip take?

dam to deadmans is pretty mellow...i'de say mabye 4 hrs at summer flows. dam to moose is a full day trip..mabye 6-7 hrs nonstop float. mosse to wilson is also very nice, a little more technical and takes mabye the same amount of time. also in your neck of the woods from driggs is the henry's fork which is world class fishing...not too too far up to the madfison and gallatin also

there is a shuttle service available but i don't have the number offhand. its run by a woman named heidi? any of the local shops could get it to you though. i might reccomend moose to wilson if you are looking for something with a bit more juice. the stretches up top can get a little bony at times although they are probably flowing great right now..the character of the river gets better and better the further you get from the dam, but all the stretches are fun and the scenery in the top stretches can't be beat.

Do people run the Big Kahuna and Lunch Counter in open drift boats? I have only seen people running it in kyaks and rafts.
Here is a nice little overlay for Google Earth I put together. It shows "Raft launches" and some other recreational activities. It has the Dam, Moran Junction, Deadman's Bar, Moose, and Wilson Bridge shown on it.
Haven't floated the are yet, just have been planning and scouting.
There is also the Green River by Wilson Bridge. On the West side of the river there is a road that has 12 access spots with fishing access and some with nice boat ramps. The water gets boney after #2 to the Bridge. There is a makeshift launch between the old and new bridges on the East side of the River, I think it is for a gauging station. You can float from there down the river a couple miles to a launch that is sandwhiched between private lands.
The float from #12 to #2 see quite a bit of traffic, but I do not think there is such a thing as a shuttle service. You could probaby ask someone to give you a ride to drop off your vehicle at the takeout. Look for BLM Road 5201 on Google Earth. If driving from Denver stop and take a look at this area. It is 20 miles North of Pinedale, 60 miles South of Jackson and 90 Miles from of Driggs.

Granite Hot Springs in the Hoback Canyon is pretty neat swimming pool and camp area. The turn off is about 25 miles South of Jackson and on the North Side of the road. It is marked, just not very well. Couple nice picks on google earth as well.
