The dimensions are the result of a complex formula and one whole day of figurin'. The formula for future reference is Beer + Brats + Burritos/ number of miles run with the dog.
The pieces spanning the width of the boat are all 3/4" x 3 1/2". The two pieces with dados cut for the rope are a full 4" tall and 1" thick. When milling the rough cut lumber I knew I wanted some extra ropes across the seat and I'm hoping that the 1" thickness will help the dados hold up. As for the amount dished out, the height drops from 3 1/2" to 2". It isn't a precise measurement, I looked around the shop for a curve I liked and found it on the top of a 9oz. dixie cup I was using for epoxy mixing. Then I just traced the lines and ended up around the 2" mark. Just make sure you epoxy two pieces together over this span to compensate for wood you're cutting out. For choosing the width of the dished out area I literally sat on a tap measure and discovered once and for all the size of my ***.....then I added a few inches either direction in case the holidays aren't particularly nice. It ended up at 20" on the dish and just under 1" left before the dadoed boards.
One last note, the pieces holding the dowel are also 1" thick because I screwed up the first dado cut board and had an even number of slots for the rope. Anyone who has done this knows the result is a rope that starts and finishes on the same side making it rather difficult to tighten with a turn buckle. I just recycled the mistake. Dowels are 1 1/4".
Very nice! Can you share some rough dimensions. Not so much worried about the full width as that would be boat specific but more with the height of the horizontal pieces and how much you cut out in the center for the seat area and the width of the seat area. THANKS! Anxious to see it with the rope and in your boat too! Great job.
