I like the simplicity of the drains and deck hatches.  Could you clue me in on your design?  I'm thinking about using the aluminum gutters like Oars Dories is making but this looks really clean!

Hey Marc,

Sorry this response is so delayed. It's great to hear from you and thanks for the compliment. Yes, we need to get Miguel off the Grand and get that boat on some muddy water. Hope to get to boat w/ you, too.

She's a piece of art, I saw her this summer in the warehouse. Hope to see her on a high water Deso next year. Marc

Thanks for the praise. Woody was a fun, project.
For texture I mixed-in a bit of slica (fine sand) "No-slip" in with the 2nd/last coat of varnish, then final (finish) coat on top of that.

Wow! She's beautiful. Congratulations.

Its looks like you laid some deck texture. What kind did you use? It blends in nicely.

Hello Robb,
Thanks for the praise. That's exciting your building a framed/decked boat. -I'm guessing it must be the Colorado River boat from Roger Fletcher's book? Keep me posted on how it all goes. Good on ya', Lad!
The Latches I use are called Southco, Lever latches. (I get them from a place called Austin Hardware, and they should have a website to order a catalog.) -They can be ordered w/ a # of different mounting brackets and "catch arm sizes", depending on your hatch thickness and "catch area", under decks. They are expensive, but work flawlessly. Generally, my lid thickness ends-up being 5/8" (3/8"+1/4" added to curb warping), on a plywood/composite hull. My landings (against the bulkhead) are in the 1-1/2" width range, and I usually "notch" this piece for the catch arm on the latch.
I would use stainless or bronze in terms of hardware.
Good luck, and enjoy the journey.
Andy

Andy,

Woody looks like a piece of artwork!

I am starting a 17 foot framed / decked boat myself for the winter project. I was wondering where you got the black hatch latches, and what does the hatch design look like underneath as well as what thickness of decking do you use?

Any pointers regarding dory details would be appreciated before re-inventing the wheel!

Cheers,

Robb Grubb

Hi Mike,
I've tried to respond to you a #/times, but I think my computer ate too many cookies! (borrowing my wife's laptop, now..) Thanks for the notes and comments on Woody. Yeah, she's a piece of floating furniture, and not sure what the new, owner wants to do with her. I do know I've boated w/ toenail polish on a #/times! Fun project, but I'm ready to take a break from varnishing for a spell! Cheers, Andy
