I'm a native Oregonian, grew up watching and helping my dad (Virgil Cole) build river boats. His boats were unique in many ways (all of them had padded folding back front seats). He built the first one (big red) in the early sixties. I used to sit on the deck and look for rocks when he first started to run the upper McKenzie. He knew that river like no one else. An expert oarsman, he introduced the sport to many, who came to know him as "The old man of the river". He was friends with some well known river rats and whenever we would pass someones house on our way to put in, he'd honk the trucks horn madly. He took pictures of all his boats. I'll look for them and post em. The last boat he worked on was an old wood boat we picked up for $150.00. Dad was 95% blind and terminal with cancer but he fixed it up so I could have a boat to carry on his weekly runs. I couldn't row last summer because I had shoulder surgery, so I'm aching to get to it now.
Boats I own:
An old woody that my dad and I fixed up before he died.
