I wanted to let you know I have plans for a 17x54 at my website http://bakerwooddriftboats.com/ I like the 17x54 boat WAY more than a 16x48. My boat has a wider transom and is wider in the middle of the boat than most wood boats.
David Bristow here again. The paint I used was Benjamin Moore,Super Spec, DTM Alkyd Low Lustre, two coats brushed on over a primer. I had sanded the previous several coats of varnish. I am sure that others will recommend another paint but this was the recommendation of the local paint shop. For my purposes it looks ok. Better than the splotched stain.
I am from California, living in Houston Tx. I tend to prefer the more traditional designs from Oregon, like the McKenzie and Rogue river type boats. Try google for Midwestern style designs that may work better for you in the rivers in you area.
David Bristow here. I did not build the boat with the new paint. Don Hill did in 1983. It is his 16 ft Standard. It has had a couple of previous owners. I painted it sage after the previous owner's ratty varnishing job. I love the old beast and spend a few hours each year sanding, varnishing and touching up some part of it.

He has a great book on the history of driftboats which include plans to study.
Let me know what you think?
