"Thanks!  I actually ordered a low angle jack plane, with a 14" base.  I was going to stack 6 pieces of ply to make 3 joints, but I'll take your advice and just do one joint at a time."

"Hi Ken, My dad and I are finishing up our drift boat, and I wanted to suggest the method we used for scarfing: We used a hand-held belt sander, and sanded it til there was an equal distance between all the different layers of wood. Hope this helps"

Lawrence E. Long replied to Ken Shindledecker's discussion Which plane for scarph/scarfing plywood?
"Ken: All the boats/canoes I have built were scarfed 1 joint at a time with 4 ft wide sheets of Merranti or Okume  with 1:8 scarfs.  Thicknesses were from 4 mm to 9mm depending on the boat.  Okume is much easier to work as…"

"I think I'd put Coat-It on the bottom.  Yes, I live in the Will. Valley, near Eugene. Does this "Old Dude" have a flat bottom, or is it "V", or slight "V" bottom?"

"Where do you live?  One thing I realized yesterday is that much of my use will be dragging the loaded boat across a bunch of different kind of junk.  So . . . if I build a Glass-over-Wood boat of some sort, I'll definitely coat the…"

"Ken, I like 3/8 for bottoms unless I am building a fast speed boat then it's 1/2 or up to 1". just depends on how fast the boat is designed for. for what you are wanting I would go either 1/4 or 3/8. just depends on if you use floorboards…"
