Finally got around to getting some pay-backs on a piece of mahogany I've been holding a grudge with for quite a spell. Two winters ago (about this time of year) a particular rail decided it didn't want to be a part of my nice new drift boat. When I decided to "force" the issue it decided to push back. Actually, it was more of a recoil; darn thing split and punched his way through some plywood in the process...

So there he is shortly after our little tiff - told the bugger, you may not end up being a rail, but your going to be a part of this boat one way or another (especially considering what I paid for you).

So it's been almost two years; and he thought he was safe hiding in that pile of scrap wood. Probably figured I forgot about him. Hardly. Just figuring out the proper punishment - as they say, revenge is a dish best served cold. All I knew was there was definitely going to be some major bending involved...

Well this was the week -

And now you pay - As I figure you can't get much bendier than the hoop of a net.

I also hope you also like the smell of fish stink.

Oh yea - and being wantonly discarded to the deck prior to the taking of every single picture.

Still got a good bit of you left over too - not sure if I should make more nets or maybe figure out an even worse punishment.... Maybe I'll just put what's left of you back on the wood pile for a spell, and let the two of us think about it for a while.

Bet you wish you'd had stayed a rail.

Greg - Thanks.

Steve, Glad to gear your getting that registration and trailer stuff wrapped up cause its starting to get pretty nice weather wise around here - even caught a few on dries last weekend. Good luck with it.

And, no I did not steam it. Just cut it into 1/8" strips. That straight grained stuff bends pretty good, especially when its thin.

John,

I also want wood to pay for what it has done to me. Sent out the reg last week and also found a trailer.

Did you steam that piece?

Steve

Chris, Thanks. I used an old busted up wooden (and store bought) net as the basic hoop template/pattern - also made sure replacement bags were available in that hoop size.  From that I made a jig out of 3/4" plywood to bend the wood into the proper shape. I kinda winged the handle - basically determined the width I wanted and cut a short piece of wood that size. I then clamped the hoop ends to this shorty piece and it allowed me to figure out the curvature of the top of the handle (where the hoop and handle are connected).  It came out better than I expected for a first net attempt - I definitely like having a wood net with the wood boat. The fact that they are related is all the better. J.G.

That is really cool. Serves him right (or probably more affectionately, her right...) I really love wood nets and the materials have been put to great use! This has made me think that I should turn my whole boat into a bunch of nets - since I have been fighting this 40 year old drift boat for so long...it would serve HER right! - Of course, I would not have a platform to fish from - but a sea of nice old nets. Did you use a form or pattern? I would be interested - since I have some old oak that would be good to make into a net or 2...thanks for sharing.
