how to fix a hole !

I have a 14 ft boat that has some issues. Rot in the side. anyone ever fix a boat with rot in the side? please give me some tips or tricks if you have any!

Here I am.  Been busy fussing with snowboats.  Dave is right on as always.  The lap joint method we have used in the past works well in this situation.  A few things that have worked for us are: 1 build your patch first and trace it onto the side panel.  2 cut the hole section of the panel square. 3 lay the patch on and trace the hole onto the patch. 3 use your router to remove 1/8" (on 1/4" panels) to the coresponding mating surfaces.  4 add epoxy and clamp together.  The fun part of this proceedure is to invent a clamping system that will hold your patch in place and also conform the the curve of the sidepanel.  Build a jig that anchors to the frames and use various sizes of wedges to get the pressure that is needed to hold the piece in place. 

Search around on this site for the repair we did on Dutch's boat.  It has a set of images of the jig we rigged for a similar repair.

AJ....oh....AJ, where are you?

 

I think you will be cutting the rot out square-ish.  Then use a router to remove a succession of plies in the plywood.  make your patch to mate up with this and glue/clamp it all back into place. 

 

Search this site, AJ had a really great vintage boat that needed alot of repairs doene to it, worse than yours.
