Hello

Im new to boat building and have started a Rapid Roberts style project. I have collected several plans off of the internet after reading Roger Fletchers Book really hooked on building one myself. I'm not new to wood just wood boats and dont mind doing my homework before getting started. Despite all that I have found the one measurement that eludes me is the width of the frames at the top of the riser ? .. please excuse the lack of correct terms I'm still learning :O)

Any advance would be greatly appreciated ... Thanks

Hello Glenn, I'm late on this comment but here it is anyway.
I have never heard of cloth used on a framed drift boat. The frames are very strong without added cloth.

If you are going to epoxy the frames you should varnish them afterword with a good UV protection varnish. You could also round over all exposed corners. A ding on a corner will break through the epoxy and allow moisture into the lumber. If you round those corners and then epoxy and varnish you will get less damage to those corners from normal wear.

Good morning - I am actually replying to you from up in Alaska - ain't technology grand (at times). Anyway the epoxy on it's own doesn't add strength - glass gives it the strength but wetting out does give you waterproofing. Once I'm back in Boise I will try to get by and see your progress. Jon

Ok I have the frames cut out .. that was pretty straight forward ... ready to glue them together but have a question about resin ... I'm using system 3 and was wondering if wetting the frames alone increases strength or should I add some fiberglass cloth ? ... I'm a big guy and so is my fishing buddy so I'm trying to find the balance between weight and strength.

Thoughts ?

Go 1-1/2". I don't taper my frames to receive the upper inner rail, but you may. I prefer to notch them out and do like Sanderson says- as starting from stem to stern, go 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 1-1/2", 1-1/2" , 1-1/4" . I believe that is a six frame build, right? If you leave them all 1-1/2" then you will have plenty of fat to notch them out.

You get the idear. good luck. The RR is a sweet boat, I plan to build one myself..............eventually. I have built the Trapper in Rogers book. similar design.

it looks like anywhere from 1 1/4in to 1 3/4in. if i am correctly reading what measurement you are looking for. some of the boats i have looked at start around 1 inch at frame 1 and go to 1 3/4 at frames 4,5,and 6 then go back to 1 inch at frame 9. I hope this helps.
