Even though its snowing outside the time has come to start thinking about nice long days on the water.
I have been wanting to set up a wooden boat multi-day for our forum and friends of our forum, so here it is. Woodies on the Yellowstone.
We will put in below the whitewater section (crystal cross to itch-ka-pee) and spend the next six days floating down one of the most overlooked multi-day trips Montana has to offer.
There are no permits required for this river. You are responsible for your own boat, camping gear, food, and beverages. We will be able to figure out the shuttle before we depart.
This is a fantastic section, ask questions and i will try to answer them in the comments section.

I'd love to run Yankee Jim if the river level is right.

Rick,
Below Columbus the Yellowstone begins to turn into a warm water stream. I have not run below Columbus however i plan on doing so this year in search of some bass fishing which i dearly love.
Cheers
Greg,
There is a little whitewater on the section however, (this is a big however) the Yellowstone is the Longest free flowing river in the lower 48 therefore it is extremely dependent on snow pack. So most of the class I-II rapids that are on the section for the trip are large rollers with a few easily avoidable obstacles. In other words easy peasy lemon squeazy.
Above our put in there is a section called Yankee Jim Canyon that contains several class III drops and at high water (like last season) can get positively monstrous. I was planing on heading to the put in a day early if the water is good and running Yankee Jim right before the trip. This is an option for those with the skills necessary to safely run whitewater in their boat.
The total miles for the trip is aprox. 115mi.
Cheers
Mark, have you ever floated downstream from Columbus? I was supposed to take my friend from Columbus so he could photograph Lewis & Clarks path for his web site lewisandclarktoday.com but he got sick so I traveled south from columbeus making my way to Yellowstone and then back to Spokane. Didn't get to float but had a good time fishing and exploring.
