Bondo for fairing??

Can bondo be used for fairing prior to painting? It can be sanded within 30 minutes and painted in an hour. Quick fair is great, but I was hoping for something faster. Also, doesn't quick fair need to cure for 2 weeks prior to paint or varnish?

Check to see if Bondo is polyester resin- might not be compatible with epoxy or with tradtional boat paints.- Talk to mfg- might save you a big mess. Others may have experience with Bondo- I prefer to use microbaloons and epoxy and make my own fairing ciompound.

Shawn, I have heard of it being used. Personally, I've never used the bondo brand but have used auto body filler. It works great to fill small flaws and holes. I lay down primer which makes the flaws visible then do the autobody filler then paint. I'm using auto paint as well.

We used to use bondo to fair out the crumpled aluminum dories in Grand Canyon. It would eventually spall off, but that may not be the Bondo's fault. The boats would flex in rapids and the Bondo would crack off. I don't think we used it on wood boats--not sure why.

I didn't think that it may be a polyester resin. I researched and found out that it is. According to System Three, a tie coat is required for it to bond with the epoxy. They makes a special epoxy that will act as the tie coat. Not sure if this is the way I want to go. I will probably use quick fair and wait. Thanks for all the feedback.

I did not end up using quick fair. I used regular epoxy with fillers. Still working on the boat very slowly. It's only been 12 years to get to this point. Another several months (at the rate that I am going) won't matter much.

Right on. I think the epoxy+filler route is better anyway. In my experience the quick fair wasn't so quick. Also I was able to achieve a much smoother surface with the epoxy+filler mix than the quick fair. I think you made a wise choice!

A coating of Cyanoacrylate (super glue) on the bondo will make the epoxy adhere if it's a small repair.
