Anybody here in Colorado or nearby want to try to schedule a float this summer.  I would love to see everyone wooden boats and get some ideas for my next build.  Maybe a float on the upper Colorado sometime in July or August.  Do a little drift fishing and maybe grill some lunch, possibly even do an overnighter! Seems like there are at least 5 boatbuilders on here from Colorado.  I'm busy all June and runoff should be pretty much crankin then.   I get jealous reading about the wooden boat festivals in Jackson and in Oregon.  If there's any interest  I'll set a weekend aside that we could meet up.

hell yes...

I've always thought a "Colorado Plateau Wood Boat Float" would be fun.  include the Utards, overnight on the moab daily...or something...Sponsored by Canyonlands Field Institute..blah blah...just ideas...

Utards,  who would they be anyway?

Hope we cross paths for a day on Deso.  Looks like many members of the standard crew will be there.  The new boat is ready to go so, it's time to trash the new paint job and spill some beer on it.

Hey Larry, If you decide to make this run let me know and maybe we can get together for a pick up on the take out.

I'm definately interested in this run.

I was in Winter park on a job just before I started building this Boat and made several attempts to fish the section Mark is talking about, down to State Bridge, but never made it.

I hear that section is AWSOME FISHING; the flowes should be a just right in July for real good fishing too.

I have a new freind who is a guide and used to work for my cousin (Old Moe Guide Service on the Green) and gave me some good tips for fishing that section - he say's it one of their best floats for fishing.

I wouldn't mind making a 2-3 day'er out it since we would traveling so far anyway - wouldn't be much sense in making a 1 dat run and turn right around and travel back the same night.

Mark,

That sounds like a great idea!  Keep me posted on the dates.  I'll probably be floating every weekend this summer, so chances that we'll run into each other on the water sometime anyway are pretty good.

Great idea...wood boats...fly fishing...barbecues...i would come up from the western slope for that
I am deff interested in this!

Thanks for the responses.  I'm leaning towards Saturday, July 23rd.  Floating the Upper Colorado from Pumphouse to Rancho del Rio or State Bridge, your choice.  I can try to get there a day or two early and set up camp at the Benches site below Yarmony rapid.  We could float down to there and BBQ, have a beer play a game of horseshoes or washers and talk wooden boats and fishing.  Then you all can decide if you want to camp or float out.  I would like to see how many boats we may see on the river before making more of a plan than this.  Also in interest of not having to go through the BLM for a permit I will try not to refer to this as a Wooden Boat "Festival" but just an organized "Float" of friends with wooden boats.  Hope a few more of you can try to make it and look forward to any input on this idea from all parties.

Thanks,  Mark

Sounds like a great idea. Marc

Mark,

I'd be interested in a "Upper C." float. I'm right here in Fraser, and could help set things up at "camp". Keep me posted as we get closer. More snow here today and supposed to fall most of the week, so the snowpack/water situation is looking awesome this year!

Mark, I would love to do something like this. But mid july, or really most of the summer is no good for me. Im not on that streach a lot, but I would think mid july the water may be a bit blown out for the fishing to be killer. Its not like it mattters for me though, I dont catch a lot of fish anyway.

It would be cool to do another wooden boat "float" sometime later in the season when the water slows way down, but before it gets way cold. Like when everyone else is giving up and going into hibernation we can all go out and talk about what a great year everyone has had. Just an idea to go along with the july "float".

Ben,  Your boat's looking great and would hope to do the float some time that you and your new vessel can make it.  In my past experience floating the upper C runoff is usually late may through June.  We had some great floats in the past years in late July with good water levels.  Problem in July tends to be a lot of river traffic.  Regardless of when we decide to do a wooden boat float I'll probably float the weekend of July 23rd and camp.  Most likely with a few rafts and fiberglass boats thatmy friends run in.  There's no saying we can't do more than one float or schedule for a weekend later in the year when we all aren't so busy with our summer schedules and when the crowds diminish.  Look forward to more input on dates.  Thanks.

I am interested for sure........

Keep us posted on a for sure date

Mike
