Design Idea

Hey guys,

I mocked up a scale model for a wood sled. This is basically Finnell's Mini Dory with a couple mods to length and transom. Here are the base specs.

Overall side panel length @ 205" (when flat)

54" Bottom

12 Degree Rake on Transom @ 20"+ high

22 Degree Side Flare Angle (constant)

Ultimately the plan would be to run this with a jet outboard. (Somewhere in the 60/40 range)

I have also been tinkering with the idea of adding a constant 6 degree deadrise and possibly a tunnel at the transom. I have the tunnel hull schematic from Outboard Jets in CA.

Still in the prelim/research stages, open to suggestions or thoughts.

The 18' Hyde power drifter has a flat bottom with a tunnel,where i fish you can here the 60/40 cavatate when going over small rapids.For smaller jets i think the tunnel does more harm then good by disturbing the water flow and adding air.

The V hull will make it ride nicer but will also float lower in the water and make it harder to row/turn.

Looking at the Rogue PD the floor tapers in a little towards the stern,not sure if this helps or not?The production PD 'ers all seem to be like your model with parallel sides.

So my basic research indicates that a true flat bottom with a tunnel is not a great design. (This is general consensus I got from Outboard Jets)

I am more and more leaning towards keeping it a true flat bottom aft, no tunnel, maybe add some deadrise in the bow only to cut some chop and reduce pounding. Not sure.

I would also like to use this around some of the lakes and calm days on the big lake shorelines. I realize no one boat can do everything...

This is a boat a guy down in Flint Mi built with a jet on it. He might bring it to our wood boat show in June

I think your on the right track,I have a modified V jon with a 60/40 jet.The V helps when hitting rollers jetting up stream but on a lake it pounds.

I have been looking at all types of designs. I was even looking at the Hog Island 16' Skiff, it's rotomolded and wooden boat sacrilege, but a cool concept nonetheless.

Jason he is the guy that drew me a couple pictures, gave me a couple ideas and sent me a old Tatman instruction booklet to look at, and talked me into building a boat. Cool guy, I have never met him in person yet (and I owe him a breakfast) but have exchanged alot of emails and talked on the phone a few times. He has built a few boats, not for show, but for fishing. He has a fishing cottage up here in Keliva. I dont have many pics of that boat but heres a couple more

Jason:

I hope you glued your boat frames to the side panels with epoxy.  Tatman never did this.  The boat frames without glue will loosen when the boat is traveling or under power.

I would definitely glue the frames to the sides. The other boats I built have been glued as well.
