Aaron Helfrich 17X52 Highside

Side panels; 6mm Meranti Hydrotek 1088BS
Transom; 18mm Meranti Hydrotek 1088BS
Bottom; 1/2 inch Marine fir plywood
Frames, seat braces, stem, floor boards; Alaskan yellow cedar
Gunwales, inside handrail, chine log, outside chine; Oregon white oak
Outside chine guards; 1/4 inch strip UHMW
Bottom finish to be determined
Stainless steel wood screws & hardware
All plywood pieces and outside chine will have initial coat of penetrating epoxy, then finished with 3 coats of marine spar varnish.
All other wood parts will be finished with 3 coats of marine spar varnish.
To include oar lock blocks drilled to 5/8 for standard oar lock shank
To include bow eye.

I have not worked out of wood boat for 3 decades and have decided I started in wood and will end in wood, with the possible exception of the Rogue River. The lining channel is brutal.

A friend mentioned Ill need more finish, any other thoughts?

Thx. Adh

I've observed some checking on Meranti Hydrotek I used for the bottoms of storage compartments on a seat - was coated with varnish only.

Other decks were covered with epoxy, 4 oz glass, then varnish. These show no checking. According to construction guides, epoxy alone will not prevent checking; at least light glass is also needed.

So, if it were mine, I would cover at least the outside with 4 oz glass.

What plans are you using for a 17 x 52 highside?

I am not the builder. He said it will have Woodie Hindman lines.

Aaron: Suggest 2-3 more coats of varnish on the parts. Or when the season is done put a few on it before you drydock it for the winter.

Good Luck
