Hey guys,
I have re-read some of the old threads concerning painting our boats.
I am thinking of going with a "porch paint" for my exterior. The outside of the boat has been epoxied and lightly sanded. I want to paint this a dark color, do I need to prime over the epoxy before paint? Tinted primer maybe?

Let me know what you think.
Thanks!
Jason

Jason,

You just got done spending many, many hours building a wonderful boat and now you want to skimp on the paint?  The outside of this boat is going to take 1 quart of paint. yes 1 quart.   Porch paint for porches at $15/ quart or marine paint built for boats at $30/ quart.  You make the call.  Did you just build a porch?

Come on man!!!!!

AJ

Sorry AJ,  my vote is for plain old oil based exterior house paint.  You can get more colors then gray porch paint.  I am getting cheap now that I am unemployed.  After bashing a few rocks and trailer rubs it doesn't take long before they all look about the same.

No matter what I use I don't prime when it's going on top of sanded epoxy.

I will say that I like the Pettit EZpoxy urethane paints. Even on ebay it's often 35 a quart plus shipping.  Yes, 1 quart will do it but you need another quart for the touch up after the river comes up at 2 AM and some raft rubs up against the boat and D rings and strap buckles grind through the paint.

I once used Interlux perfection 2 part.  That stuff looks great and it's 70 bucks a quart.

Jason, IMHO there is a big difference in the final gloss of a work boat finish with porch paint vs the fine finish of a quality epoxy paint.  Sandy and I use Pettit EZPoxy because it is one part with no mixing.  One quart of primer and one quart of paint will easily do the outside of your pram.  Roll it on working in small sections and tip it with a dry brush as you go.  You can leave it as is; or, buff it with rubbing compound after it is dry for a mirror finish.   I would purchase a medium gray primer.

Hi Randy,

EZPoxy is a nice product.  I've found it takes a bit of thinning to get it to flow decently--- which of course varies with temperature.

On the other hand, real yacht paint-- linear polyurethane like Awlgrip-- is not more difficult to brush and is substantially tougher. And of course more expensive!

Alright AJ, marine paint it is! Good points...

Thanks for the info on the paint Randy, I will pick some up and try it out.

In regards the tinted primer, I was told I can add up to 10% of the paint to the white primer to created a tinted primer. I am going to get the Pettit EZ primer and tint that.

This does remind me that I need to repaint our porch too...haha

Thanks guys!

I am no master paintier, but I repainted my boat, which had been painted with oil base porch and floor enamel, with Pettit EZPoxy and I thought the stuff was great.  Easy to work with, glossy, durable - couldn't ask for much more.  Good luck!

After doing several tests with different kinds of paint I would agree with getting the best that you can afford is the way to go.We build boats to fish from not to repaint all the time.
