Looking for a recommendation on a quality spar varnish to use for this project.  I have used a general hardware store brand varnish in the past and wondering if anyone has found a higher quality spar varnish for this application.  Thank you.

Guys,

In a related issue regarding Oar finish.  Has anyone here varnished the Para chord Wrap used on the oars?  I see evidence of using epoxy on the first and last wrap to anchor it to the Oar, but have not heard of anyone finishing them with some kind of coating.  How about Linseed oil?

Would like an opinion or two.

Mac.    I used - McCloskey man-of war - gloss - spar marine varnish to redo my oars.

As they were a little water stained [too deep to sand out ]- I added a drop of black paint tint to the varnish.

This did not allow for the wood grain to show through ; but ended up as a nice deep finish; after three coats.

It's kind of a nice alternative to painting oars . best not to add too much color to mix ,

and keep coats even. try any color.

Then take oars out and beat them on some river rocks ,for desired effect.  - M
