Interested in hearing from people who have ideas about how long ago and actually how ? people first got involved in Wooden Boat Building.
As a form of transport there is no doubt that boats preceded anything else by a long long way.
Even in cultures where domestication of animals doesnt really extend past the dog, some chickens and where pack animals nor ridden animals are known there are usually still the canoe or raft or reed boat.
How did we humans first get on board a log and move about on water.

I dont think science has a real good answer for that. Recently I read an article about a group skulls found in Brazil that were clearly not meso american, but rather from the same group of early humans that colonized Australia and parts of the indo pacific that came from Africa originally. It pretty much put the scientific community in a snit. They carbon dated the skulls they were about 20K older than the earliest meso american artifacts that were found. This find coincided with another skeletal find in Alaska that was also older and not Asiatic nor Aboriginal but rather European. This put the Native American Groups in thither because both finds meant they were not the first to discover the Americas. That other groups had hit Americas shores before them by boat, with the find in Brazil they were clearly Ocean going not walking across a land bridge. It needless to say has rocked the scientific and Native American communities. The Alaska find became political quick, a group of native Americans sued the federal government and had the site literally covered over with tons of earth. Guess they didn’t dig what that find could have done to their claims at being the first Americans. As for the Brazil find, scientists were able to through DNA samples trace the African origin of the DNA to several groups of existing native people in Argentina and Southern Brazil. These groups would not have been contaminated by the specific gene from African slaves nor any other source other than that of these Aboriginal sea going people. Here is a link to an article on the subject. http://www.ipoaa.com/first_americans_were_australians.htm
Based on the evidence they have it would put ocean going wooden craft at 50k years ago.
