Why not Red Oak

I am almost ready to do the chine caps gunnels and rub rails on my rapid robert.  White oak is avalible ( special order , expensive )  But I have red oak avalible easily and cheaply.  Why not use the Red Oak?

TAKE MY ADVISE... WHITE AND RED OAK IS WAY TO HEAVY FOR A DRIFTBOAT...

THEY ARE ALSO VERY POROUS AND ROTS EASILY.

Spot on advice Tim!  Avoid Oaks for drift boats.  Use Sapele, Khaya, Utile, Honduras, Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Yellow Cedars.  Pay the price for these fine boat building woods now or pay for premature maintenance of the Oaks later.

how well would maple work?

Jake: Don't use maple for anything on a boat. Not rot resistant,heavy and gets a "blue stain" fungus.  Worse than red oak.

Thanks for the info!! Any thoughts on Walnut? I have a big pile of it waiting to be used on some sort of project.
