Great picture, I was fortunate enough to do a trip with H on the Lower Main when I worked for Bill Bernt. Devils Tooth is probably the most butt puckering rapid on the MF in low, low water. If you make it through, then you have House Rocks and Jump Off right below. The lowest water years that I can remember are 1987, 1988, 1992, and 2000. Probably some others, but those come to mind as the worst. One of our guides in 1987 said he was going to write a book. "How to walk your boat down the Middle Fork"

Herb , I have run Snow Hole and it was just a few rocks showing, the rapid just above Snow Hole was quite a surprise! Did you guys run the Lower Main in Wooden Boats at high water? If so did you run with the boats rigged as shown in the picture? If so did you carry passengers? It looks like you carry a load lashed low where passengers weight would be. I am considering running the Lower Main in late August and wondering about running floatation in my boat. I have run the section from Cottonwood to Heller Bar about 50 times so am familiar with the river.

I got this picture from my friend H. Hilbert.  We used to guide together in Forks.  When he sent it to me his comment was "High Water on the MF."

Rick, I am sure he went left.

Randy, Sorry I don't remember the exact date but it was 10 or 12 years ago.  We dead headed a lot in that time frame.

I think there is a picture of "Snow Hole" , in my pictures, from one of those "high water" years. All you see from the top is rocks.

Wood boats are great in low water situations.  There was one trip where some fellows had a new metal boat without a scratch or ding.  We saw it again a few days later and it looked like some one had used it to chop wood on.  They really wanged it some where........
