In February of this year on a very cold day I met Tom Martin and together we spent several hours photographing the Music Temple in the collection of the Grand Canyon National Park and measuring her to do another recreation of her .  She will be painted in the colors of the Susie Too which are white with a wide green stripe below her gunwales.  The hull of the original was built by Keith Steele on an order by Martin Litton who founded Grand Canyon Dories with  his Portola which he renamed the Diablo Canyon ( also a Keith Steele boat), the Susie Too which he renamed the Music Temple and the Flavell II. The Portola was recreated by Greg Hatton for the 2012 Historic River Boats Afloat trip he has reported on here.  I was lucky enough to be asked to join that trip for the Diamond Creek to Pearce Ferry section at the end and got to row 4 of the 5 historic dory recreations that had been done for that trip and got to ride in all of them.  The Susie Too dory was the one I felt the most at home in and the one I spent the most time in. So when the time came to put my application in for the 2014 Grand Canyon private trip lottery I did so and when my name was one of the lucky ones drawn I only had to look  at my photos from that trip to know which one I wanted to build.  Luckily that is the one that Dave Mortenson asked me to build for  the trip.
