Hello all,

I'm Bob from Salem, MA, and I have wanted to own/build a boat since I was 10. I now have the time, and a place to work, but want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I throw together something thinking it is good, only to sink in the harbor.

Fair warning, my carpentry skills are, at best, minimal, so I may be asking a lot of questions. Hopefully, I won't be too much of a pest!  ( lol )

Thanks for the link. I'm looking at a few designs. First I need to decide whether I want sail or power. The Babson looks like it would work good around here. I'm thinking no matter what, I'd like something between 15' & 25' (+/- a foot or two.) If I go motor, I'd like something along the lines of a small lobster boat, and I also like dories. It will be used for pleasure, but I'm a simple guy with simple tastes. I don't need a floating palace like some of the boats around here. By the same token, I want a boat that is a bit tough. (Someday, we may be moving to the Tribal Lands on Martha's Vineyard. My fiance is an Aquinnah Wampanoag)

Questions are what keeps this forum going.  You'll get lots of help and direction to other sources.  Welcome and enjoy the process.

Are you thinking of a more traditional East Coast boat?  The first big question is to land on a design and to decide if you are going to start with plans or a kit.

Wooden Boat sells a great kit for harbors called the Babson.  CLICK HERE FOR THE LINK

There are lots of choices for our flat bottom boats from the West Coast.
