Bob Simoneau's Blog

Hi.

Hello all,

I'm Bob from Salem, MA, and I have wanted to own/build a boat since I was 10. I now have the time, and a place to work, but want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I throw together something thinking it is good, only to sink in the harbor.

Fair warning, my carpentry skills are, at best, minimal, so I may be asking a lot of questions. Hopefully, I won't be too much of a pest!  ( lol )

Bob, thanks for the response. I posted this reply before I read the info you had posted. I can't remember the name for the guys and gals that dress up in authentic cowboy garb and compete with each other with a variety of shooting irons. Your outfit reminded me of one of those. Randy pointed you to a good looking boat, I just took a quick peek at it. Lot's of the tasks that we undertake with driftboats would be the same with a boat like that. Again we welcome you aboard.

Bob, welcome aboard! You will find that your questions are very welcome. Two great resources to speed up your learning curve and answer many questions are: 1.Read the past blogs and forum posts, many of the questions have puzzled us individually have often been discussed and a variety of opinions provided. The search feature at the top of the page is also very handy. 2. Roger Fletcher's book Drift Boat's and River Dories at Riverstouch.com is excellent and provides a great history lesson as well a wealth of photos, details on constructing a variety of boats and is well written and highly respected.

Have fun, keep us posted on your build. Looks like you do some shooting too.
