It was Spring low flows but this Grand Canyon dory lives to tell another tale. Check out the Zizumara's run of Lava Falls. April 2012, 7-11,000 cfs. Enjoy!

Howdy. I ran Lava in Oct 2011 with OARS, and when we were scouting it I got a great shot of Zizumara reaching for the sky off a wave in Lava. I spend half a year every year on a sailboat, so just now getting around to editing my trip pix. Thought I'd try to find whoever was in the boat and email them the picture (I have a couple of other shots as well). Took me a while to find you, if that was you. Oct 13 2011 -- was that you in Lava? Should I email the pix to you?
Cheers, Bill Hoffman
Holy cow. you truly are bad ass. great video and song selection.
Nice run!
Beautiful run Kelly, great job on the video. Look forward to more!
That's some fine work having one oar knocked out of the lock.
Why can't we do that every day? Great video. Any other videos from the trip?
Nice video Kelly.... and OUTSTANDING line at the top of Lava. You nailed it. What a nice clean run and you even got to fiddle with a wayward oar... merit badge!! ha ha
Great job!! How did you do in Bedrock?? That's a pesky rapid in a wood boat!!

Hi Randy,
That wall of water is called the "V Wave" and yeah, that thing is mean. Some say the basic strategy is to pull your oars out of the water, grab the foot brace, hang on then get squared up for the big waves coming off the black rock. Something to hook your feet into for the big waves is nice.
Most GC dories have an old piece of an oar bolted a couple inches aft of the foot brace. You can slip your forefoot right under. It works great and you can also use it as an alternate foot brace. The Ziz has windsurfing foot straps mounted to the foot brace. I did this primarily because I didn't have any old oars to cut up but it is working out well. The plus; it locks your feet in better, its soft on the feet and its adjustable. The minus; it is mounted to the foot brace so it gets in the way when you are not necessarily needing to slip your feet into them. I'll look for some photos and post them later.
Wow, Granite is just a violent rapid. As you know, it would be pretty darn easy to get washed out in that one! I'm hoping to see the footage :) Here is a link to my Granite run last year. http://vimeo.com/34009123 I think I was about 1" from flipping... brrr. Randy that swim must have been cold! I'm too wimpy to get rolled out of my boat.
Fantastic video Kelly,
You got rocked pretty hard hitting the wall of water before the pool at the bottom. I love that part in in slow motion. I have to ask. Do you have something that you are hooking you feet under? It looks like you were able to hang on with your feet.
Being new to the need of keeping myself anchored in the boat I managed to get my fat but rolled over the gunnel in Granite. That video brought much delight to everyone in camp. Glad I could entertain. I've been thinking that some kind of foot anchor would be very smart.
What a great video! Wish I the time to edit footage... if I did I'd buy a gopro! amazing quality and views!
