I'm new here. I'll try and get a picture up soon. As the boat I'm building has taken shape I've felt almost as soon as the hull was formed that it needed more freeboard at the stem. Maybe I had that feeling from the very beginning because the first piece I made, the stem, I made much longer than necessary.
As the work has progressed I've entertained various scenarios for extending the freeboard 8.5" at the stem tapering down to 1.5" just forward of the oarlocks. I have a piece of mahogany 1x10x8' long that I can get the required two matching pieces from. I've mastered the cut at the tie in to the stem cap. I've also added on offset rail cap to bend the piece to. The plan is to put these two pieces in a steam box before making the bend. I've not done this particular process before and any information would be very welcome.
Great thing about building your own boat is just that you can pretty much do what ever you want to to make it your own! These boats are tried and true and have been around for some time but if you want to add a bit here or take a bit there its all good. Have fun! show us some pics
