Any ideas?

This is the inside rail of my boat. I sanded 43 years of paint off and these dark looking like burn marks showed up. I'm thinking they are either heat marks from bending the wood or maybe from water intrusion under the paint over the years. The outside gunwale doesn't have these marks. My plan is boat oil and varnish. A little bummed over the looks but it maybe it gives a little vintage persona to the boat. Any ideas?

That is real patina that only comes with age. Embrace it, don't sand it away.

I think it is hard to separate the rail from the rest of the boat. I would suggest putting the rails and the history next to the boat. See what your mind says! Are there other discoveries to be found.

Patina is a one time experience. When it is gone, so goes the history.

However, whoever writes / edits history has the last word. The same applies to color trim, or stains, or whatever you may think makes it special!

PS. I have vintage motorcycles and ones that have been restored. The unrestored ones show pride in their history. A restoration is just another face lift / cosmetic procedure.

Mark, I would leave it alone.  It shows some of the history of the boat.

"Thanks for the input guys. I was good with the rails until the wife walked in the shop and said"oh Im not liking that" I told her it was old boat patina hidden under 40+ years of paint. Looks cool to me I going to keep it that way. Thanks again

That looks like wear marks or impact from something. I'm with the rest of the comments. You got character there.

It is hard to tell from the picture what you have. It sounds like you are restoring an older boat so you have to ask yourself do I want a boat that looks new or a boat with history and tales to tell which you may never entirely know. You are the one skippering and if you are not happy or having to make up reasons for what is shown on her lines then you will never fully enjoy ownership. So before you go any further you have to make that decision. I have a few marks and wrinkles on my 16 ft. Mackenzie and they all have a story to tell and I like them.
