I start mine at the front, mostly cuz my boats have a lot of bend up front and it is hard to get the cap tight on the end if I start in the middle. I don't see why you would have to cut the cap to size before hand, leave it long and cut and belt sand flush. You will have to trim one side before you can do the other side though.

Mike Thanks for the picture ihad my sister act as the ladder and we tried to start it at the front but my chine cap split so we tried starting in the middle witha new chine cap.

got the chine caps on a week ago or so the first one was a learning experience second one went on pretty smooth. ill probably replace them after a year with white oak.

last night (sunday) i sanded and faired off the chine chaps oiled them and flipped the boat and put on one of the sheer rails. it actually looks like a boat now whoo!

i have the seats made already so im not to far from fishing the south fork of the snake maybe 2weeks

inner and outer rails on now to install my seats, fly deck and oar locks the clean and oil

got the floor in last week as well as both seats and the oarlocks.  still need to oil inside and put in fly deck/knee locks it snowed yesterday but im hoping to take on her maiden float friday
