Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member...
I'm building the Atkin "Cabin Boy" 8' skiff... lapstrake with cross-planked bottom. I've got her lofted and almost done building the forms. Aiming to finish her by Feb so I have time to build the sail by spring. Tons of fun, and hoping there are some experienced builders in this group because I'm sure to run into trouble before this project is done!

John, nice blog page! Had to notice you had a picture of the table of offsets page for Chapelles' Southwind, one of my favorite designs, would love to eventually build it for a Yellowstone lake boat!
Jeff, I'm very interested in flat-bottom boats, because I'm hoping to build one big enough to cruise down the east coast. I also like the Atkin "Shore Liner" (currently my top choice) and "Great Bear" (which has more room, but I think might be too big to row.)
However, this seems far off, since my first attempt at lofting was a complete failure:
I'm super excited about this week's garage sale find. And I have a cautionary tale about being 'too careful' (i.e. cheap) with money.
A couple weeks ago, I went to visit Roger, a very experienced boat builder in my area. I don't know what he thought of me, since I don't remember doing anything more intelligent than walking around his amazing shop with my mouth open, uttering the word 'Wow' every so often, but I learned a lot from him.
Among the other secrets he let me in on was the fact that you could find great old tools at garage sales for less money than you'd spend buying new tools of inferior quality...
