I just bought a old wooden boat and him thinking about painting the sides. Need your opinions.

Hello, my name is Cody and I live in Colorado. I just purchased an older McKenzie river Driftboat. It is definitely in need of refinishing. It came with a nice kit for refinishing the bottom with plastic core and Kevlar. What I cannot decide to do with is the sides of the boat.
I am thinking about painting the sides and leaving the gun rail stained wood. I have been told that a marine grade paint works well but I do not know if I need to put a clear coat over that? I have some RAKA Epoxy that came with the boat. Should I cover the paint with that? Thank you for any help

You will want to use a good primer, if the sides are not super fair and smooth you can use a fairing compound to work it smooth. You do not need anything over the marine paint, its a finish coat. I was gonna paint my boat but decided to go natural. I glassed the sides using epoxy, doing that needs a good marine varnish with UV in it, epoxy has none. You could glass your sides, then prime and paint. The natural rails will look good with painted sides. Look through the photo page and you`ll get lots of ideas. Post pictures!!

I am close to completing my drifter.I will glass the exterior and topcoat with gelcoat using vinylester resin as it adheres to gelcoat.I have asked the same question and there are a million different opinions as well as products.I have used these ester resins with success on powerboats, this is my first driftboat though and I labored heavily over this decision.I am waiting for the weather to warm up a bit as I live in colorado also.If you haven't made your mind yet by the time I am finished I will make my results known to all who view this site.Likewise from you would be greatly appreciated. If you want details of how I came to which product to use you are welcome to e mail me and I will call you.  pattersondreu@gmail.com.In either case good luck to you-dreu
