I have a set of plans that are designed to be used for a strong-back built boat.  The bummer...There are no dimensions for the sides and bottom (ply) of the boat.  I could probably do a lot of measuring and calculations but I am sure there is an expert here who knows what he(she) is talking about when re-purposing such plans.  Is there help here?

I have a set of those plans, once you get your chine and top rail in place you should be able to get a close measurement, I would think.

The attached visual may help you. The scale is smaller but the principles are the same. My goal here was to define my side panels so I can use free form construction; that is, build subsequent boats without a stongback. The first-off drift boats on the McKenzie were defined in a similar manner. Simply set and secure your frames, install a temporary batten at both the chine and sheer lines, and then create a side panel template, or mark and cut the actual panel. I use 1/8" x 4 x 8' heavy duty cardboard I get from local lumber yard. It's dirt cheap, is firm enough to do the job, and I don't cringe if I err. This is much easier than trying to measure and calculate locations.

Roger,

Thanks so much.  I knew there would be an expert here who had done this before.  The cardboard you talk about; do you know the suppliers name?  Would you be willing to message me with info on where to get it?  Thanks again!

Go to a appliance store and ask for a freezer or refrigerator box , it will fold out to over 12'.

I think that 1/8" masonite would do what roger has below.  That's a good idea.
