There are two versions of Dek's Olje, a #1 and #2.

Deks #1 is the deep penetrating oil that drys to a matt finish. We just got in our first shipment of 2.5 liter cans. It sells for $79.00 for the 2.5L

Deks #2 is a gloss finish that goes on over the top of Deks#1. Our supplier received some gallon cases so the current price is per gallon; however, in the near future #2 will also be sold in the 2.5L containers. The price per gal of Dek#2 is $99.00. That is the same retail price as a gallon of Z-spar varnish.

Shipping will add a bit to the total. I'm not sure who else will have Deks in your area. It has just come back on the market. I see that Jamestown Distributors still lists it as not available on their website; however, I'm sure it will find it's way back into wide distribution soon. Until then we have a couple of cases at the shop in Vida for any that want it.

Randy,

You guys always have some great pics- is there a chance you could say, oil a scrap piece of fir, a scrap piece of meranti with #1, and #2 and post pics??? Like a scrap piece of plywood half oiled, half bare?

I might be persuaded off the homebrew varnish yet......

Thank you for your response. Do you know if they have changed anything about these products? I ran into 2 guys last year with boats oiled in Dek's Olje #1 and #2 and loved them. Provided the product is the same I will happily purchase some from you. And Dave's idea of some pics would be wonderful too.... if you can accommodate us lowly plebes.

I've been told this is the same product. The Deks#2 that I was sent was even in the traditional old one gallon can so I believe it is the same stuff. I've not used a lot of Deks but many previous Tatman customers have been calling and asking for it. The photos I've seen are amazing and a gloss varnish like finish that can be sanded and repaired like oil sounds too good to be true but must be. I've not heard anyone complain about the product other than not being able to get it.

I'll do my best to post some test photos of the Deks#1 and Deks #1 with #2 and also a new product we are trying out called EcoKote. It is a very hard yet flexible polyurethane that is a UV blocker and is completely clear. I'm not going to push it too hard but I am very excited about it. It will allow the white cedar of the POC to remain white. That's not traditional to boat building but it is a fantastic look and is a solution for the woodworking people that want to retain a wood's natural color.

BTW, no one is a lowly plebe. We are all in this together. It's just about finding the appropriate set of compromises to get you on the water with the boat performing its best for you... and making you smile.

The boats I have seen with these finishes look nothing like a traditional oil finish that's for sure. It truly is unique. Thanks for the info, and only one last question, can we buy it from you guys right now?

I thank you for your willingness to impart your experience and knowledge with all of us. As has been said before on this site, it is great to have such wonderful cadre of people wiling to share.

you can get it now, but i only have 4 of #1 and 4 of #2 right now. so it might be a week or two slow. i will get pictures as soon as i can.

Sandy, Randy, you guys are ace in my book. Thanks for the photos. It looks real nice on Meranti.

Now take those peices and throw them up on the roof for 6 months. I did that with my brown boat- I made a scrap of fir, stained with the powdered water based stain, epoxied it, then varnished it. put it outside on the garage roof for about 6 months to see if it woudl fade. Suprisingly, it looked real good, and the varnish held up nice.

A wierd question- your shop floor, is that an old fir floor?
