Wood Boats and Coleman Lanterns

Hello WBP

I've got a new little "obsession" to add to my old "obsession".... I found a 1952 Coleman Lantern in an Antique store for $9.99.  I offered $7 and bought it for $9 - I'd have paid $20 (maybe not).

After a lot of rubbing and scrubbing a new gasket and mantle...

It cleaned up pretty nicely... now - if only I hadn't given away my Custom Made Oar Stand  to a good friend that admired it at the McKenzie Boat Festival - his initials are Darryl Lyons...   (I've been tinkering on weekends - and built a new one from boat "scraps")

It all comes together... I hadn't heard the soft "hiss" from an old Coleman in many years - can't believe it took me this long to figure out a great addition to my wooden boat.

Greg,

I've been an old Coleman Lantern and Stove collector for many years.  Some that I bought new at the begining of my guiding career are now collectable "classics".   My passion is out of necesity, as I use them in my outfitting business, and also a result of my compulsive personality at collecting cool things that most folks don't know much about.  While rebuiding a couple of old 20's vintage lanterns I ran across this site. www.oldcolemanparts.com

 

Check it out.  It's a bunch of guys who are as goofy about old Coleman stuff as we are about old wooden boats.  Some of them really know their stuff and it is a great resource for parts and procedures for rebuilding the really cool old stoves and lanterns.

Ha ha - AJ, you were my inspiration for this newest little "obsession"... when I saw your lanterns on the Snake I started searching for a little red lantern like I used on camp-outs when I was a kid.  I found the perfect little red lantern and that led to the green one which led to another green one, which is leading to an out-of-control hobby... ha.  You can find me on that OldColemanParts web site... I just joined the group as "FJ40" - I'm a little "goofier" than them but they broke me in nicely with very little "hazing".  There are some wood boat enthusiasts in that group too... it's a great "match".

Thanks for "rekindling" my Coleman fire.

Cool...I'll take a picture of my collection. I have about 6 of them and several railroad lanterns form my grandfather.

Very nice Dave - would love to see the collection.  I bet you've got some "classics"!!!  I've been meaning to post some pics of the "Portola" build but I'm soo slow - I don't have much to show in the way of progress... ha ha.  Been too busy with Coleman lanterns, oar stands, guiding... and oh yes - WORK!!!

Both the oar stand and the the Coleman are beauties, Greg.  I was participating in a local fly fishing forum on the topic of "stuff that exceeds your expectations" and I listed my mid-1970s Coleman grille, which looks and performs like new.

Long years ago I had a job interview in Madras, of all places, and had the opportunity to get around Oregon a bit.  I can even say I fished the Metolius and the Deschutes.  I vowed to get back for an extended visit, but it hasn't happened yet.  The Festival sounds like a perfect reason to make it happen.  We'll see.

yup... I'm hearing GREAT things about the Steelhead #'s this year... gonna be a great Fall over there!!  The only weekend I have available in Sept is the last one - Sept 30 - Oct 2 or so......   GH
