I am in the middle of rebuilding my rowing seat, just a few questions for the experts, is the wood pine? why not use a nice ash or oak dowel in place of the metal pipe? and lastly, I would really like to find a good photo of someone's seat (literally not figuratively) for pattering.
I use ash that I tuned down to size on my home built boats. It indeed does look nicer. as for a pattern, give me a PM, we'll exchange emails and I'll send you a drawing. Her is a pic of my seat.
Thanks, do you use a hard wood for the top of the rail where the rope crosses or is it one piece?
I like how you continue the double section to hold the dowels in place, mine is multiple pieces and not as strong. I don't think I can alaskan yellow cedar in southern Idaho...
What are the dimensions of your seats? my seat is only about 12.75 deep and I'm cutting the notches in the oak for the rope, I can only get 11 ropes across my seat. Am I missing something, the other seats I look at have 15 or so ropes.
this math thing is killing me, it's a good thing I'm an illustrator...
The top pieces that are notches are White Oak, 3/4" by 3/4" then notched 1/2" 1" on centers.
Look around, you for sure can get doug fir in ID. I'll send you an email.
I liek the doubled piece as it hides the dowel ends- they just sit in there, and also the screw heads are from the inside out. Nice clean look on the face.
One thing I might do differently next time is dish out the back of the seat as well as the front.
Hey Dan...
Sorry I've been a bit out of touch lately... my seat is Alaskan Yellow Cedar and the top piece that is "notched" is white oak.
Nice job on those Posters for the Boat Festival!! Everyone loved the image and the art-work. I hope you can bring your boat next year!!
I'm still out there pitching our "card line" - no takers yet... but I'm still "workin it".
See ya.

I have a blog post on this site titled "webbing not rope" that has several pictures of my newly redone rowing seat. Take a look if you like. I used Cedar, Fir and White Oak in various places on my seat.
I had a webbed seat and did not like it , I really llike the look of rope seat and don't mind the comfort. I appreciate your help, I like the way your bench looks, nice.
