Closer...

Ok - So have the decided that I wanted to varnish the exterior of hull instead of paint. I have managed a few coats and learned a bit about what not to do along the way... haha. All I have to say is "keep the wet edge" (I found "Brightwork" by Rebecca Wittman to be most helpful.)

The interior is under control - seats are roped up, floorboards finished, everything is oiled that needs to be oiled. Just need to install the anchor system in the floor and drill the hole through the transom for the rope to pass through. I am also going to use an Easy-lift Eyebolt from the gents at Tatman. Once the oar lock blocks get bolted in I will be ready to get my oars...

Here are some images I snapped today as I was cleaning up the work space.
Launch date is mid July. (the weekend of the 11th & 12th on Christine's dad's lake.)
First river float is set for the July 18 - 19. (Big Manistee River - MI)

I learned to always strain the varnish...

I plugged the end of the seat pipes and used a stainless finish washer and screw to finish it off.


I wrapped the rope to cover the turnbuckles.

Absolutely beautiful Jason! Easily one of the prettiest boats I've seen. The contrast between the oiled and varnished parts is very nice. I'm now going to have a cold frosty one from the Deschutes brewery in honor of your boat. (I'd probably have it anyway)

Nice work brother!!! Your attention to detail shows - you did all the little things so well... awesome. I strongly endorse varnish straining by the way!!! Take some pictures of your launch and submit them to Wooden Boat Magazine... we need our drift boats represented and yours would represent us so well.
How does Christine like the boat and where is she going to sit??

Jason, you've done an awesome job and I'm glad that you decided to varnish the outside instead of paint. You won't regret it. You're post has forced me to think back to when my Tatman was just finished and all clean and shiny. Now, you're first order of business is to get some fish slime on her and get her dirty!
Good luck on the final few stages. Are you floating from Tippy or Hodenpyle down? I've floated the latter a few times, never the former.

Thanks guys - I have really enjoyed getting to this point.
After a few more steps and the addition of a few accessories I will be ready to hit the water.

Christine really likes the boat. To her credit she really helped to encourage me to go through with the build, and to be confident in the work. (and not to be overly obsessive about every detail)
She will probably ride up front and take in the scenery (and toss some flies of course.) We will take some pics of the launch for sure.

We are planning to float from Tippy Dam to High Bridge on the Big Manistee.

OK I'll bite... Christine is the Greyhound, right?? At least that's who I thought I had been talking to / about on various silly posts...??? Great looking dog and she would look great up front on the fly deck watching out for trouble down the river... or tossing flies of course.

Doh!!! Jason - my apologies. Holy smokes - what a stupid, I am. I thought you signed up your Greyhound as a "member" of the Wooden Boat People because her picture is posted in the member list. And then, I thought - wow, that's an exceptionally smart Greyhound because she was posting comments every so often about your progress... which, I thought was kinda clever and funny. WOW - I am really sorry about that... and now go re-read my comments from March when I was encouraging you to come out for the boat festival - again... I thought Christine was your Greyhound - not you minister of ambiance and angling. Now you see the effects of all those coats of marine varnish. Wear a mask... I didn't and see what happened. GH

HAHA - This is funny Greg... no worries.
Christine used a pic of our dog (Ivy is her name - racing name "Poison Ivy") for her profile. It is funny that you thought it was a profile for the pup - you have no idea I was laughing out loud when reading that post! Thanks for the clarification Randy... I think that is a great pic as well.

Christi is my partner-in-crime. Hand in glove.
You actually met her a couple years ago at the boat show - briefly, so you may not remember.
Hopefully we can make it out soon and we can all have a frosty beverage together.

I need to wear my mask more often - the fumes are getting me too! haha

Excellent - a frosty beverage would be good... I know just the place - Randy's back deck overlooking the lawn and the McKenzie!!
Hopefully Christi AND Ivy can make the trip (I am such a dork)
I do remember you guys from that boat show... you were very inquisitive about my boat and you got the award for traveling the farthest that year.
