I have never snapped an oar, but have been on trips where this happened. Each time it was old wood oars which had not been cared for. I am rowing 20+ year wood Smokers on both of my boats, and they are solid. They can't be left for months in the sun and rain for multiple years; they need minimal care such as oiling and refinishing every many years. I do not keep records, but I am sure my oars go 10 years without refinishing. Do try to keep them out of the sun and rain for long periods. Finally, I strongly recommend against the rubberized tip "protectors"; I think they are rot incubators.
David, I know they promote rot. Here's pictures of a Sawyer oar I bought and a picture of the repaired oar. I cut it back to good wood and scarfed a new piece of Douglas Fir and Ash. I keep a good coat of finish on them and they work well. Never broken an oar, have seen some aluminum Carlisle oars broken in real big water on the Lower Main Salmon though. Keep control over your downstream oar as if you are floating perpindicular to the river, then it can't catch the bottom and create issues.

thanks for the reply.good to have a peace of mind. This will be my first time in a drift boat-navigating or as a passenger.
DF is tough stuff. Try breaking a small pc, 1 1/2" is pretty stout. It wont snap, maybe crack or splinter at worst but I had a hard time getting a pc of it off my boat with a saw, hammer and chisel. It would take some years of serious abuse to rot enough to break.
Maybe if they looked like these. I sat on this bench and tied on a fly last week, the bench is still pretty solid, the oars? not so much, lol
very funny mike.your humor is not lost on me.I received my dierks anchor set up and mocked it up. It is all above the floor and I am happy with the set up.simple and effective and 217$.It is hopefully the last of being 200 dollared to death.of course to be following the last of the 300 dollared to death -you know what I mean.I am so fired up about this wooden boat fest on the co river I haven't snapped a single picture.Too concentrated on finishing.I plan on taking a lot of pics on my float and I will post them then. Thanks for your response.Dreu
