Hey guys this is my first post. I wanted to see if you could suggest a solution to this. My dad and I had planned to build a wood boat for a while, we decided on the plans and tried to get to work...however, the wood needed for the boat has been anything but easy to come by. Can you guys suggest a boat (approx. 12-16 ft) where the material is a lot easier to find. Any help would be appreciated. As far as the original plans go, i can't remember exactly what it was because they're at my dad's house, but it was a 16 dory type skiff.

Craig, give us an idea of what you plan to do with your boat. Lakes, rivers, swamps(after all you are in Florida), ocean, flats, etc? Primarily this site is geared toward McKenzie River style framed driftboats, however there are other styles of boats built by members. In case you haven't found the Wooden Boat Forum site they have a great section on designs and plans for all types of wooden boats. While this site mainly has members from all over the United States and others from around the World the majority are located in the western portions of the US. Wooden Boat Forum is more International in nature. I spend a lot of time on both sites so I can learn more about boat building in general.

Regarding the plans you had what type of wood did they call for? There may be some boat designs that that may call for dimensional lumber that can be changed to plywood. There are many boats built in Florida so I presume there are some reasonable sources of materials. I would also presume that there may be some access to some imported woods that can be substituted for the called for materials.

Give us some feedback, there is a tremendous group of people on here with lots of knowledge.

Good luck on your build.

Rick, thanks for the reply. I plan on using it on the brackish creeks off the ICW. As far as woodenboat forum, I tried to get on last week and the site kept going down (I've also had computer problems lately though too). If you don't mind, I'll get the plans from my dad's house and give a list of the wood needed, we've tried to but just can't find it. Thanks.

Craig, I'm glad my information has been helpful. I explored the ICW for part of a day looking for a possible Jimmy Buffet home. There was a listing for Jane Buffet near Cocoa Beach and I had some time and a rental car so I went for a look. Didn't see Jimmy but a few alligators and lots of interesting houses.

I have never had trouble getting on the Wooden Boat Forum site. What is wrong with your computer? My computers have had just about everything go wrong with them possible, send me a message through my page, maybe I can help.

Good luck,
